                           weather forecasting, geophysical surveys, teaching, consultancy etc.In addition they also
                           undertake research for which in a number of cases no separate account is maintained,
                           wherever such details have not been provided, their expenditure on research has been estimated.     
                  3.      The number of R&D units in the private sector varies from year to year.
                  4.      Data refers to 1270 in-house R&D units of  Private Sector Industries which include 159 SIRO units
                           and projected data for 121 in-house R&D units.
                  5.      Data for 1997-98 has been estimated by applying the rate of growth for the
                           period 1992-93 to 1996-97 sector-wise.
