  Introduction  
       
 

The Ministry of Environment and Forests is the nodal agency in the administrative structure of the central government for planning, promotion and coordination of environmental and forestry programmes. The main activities of the Ministry are conservation and survey of flora, fauna, forests and wildlife; prevention and control of pollution, afforestation and regeneration of degraded areas and protection of environment. These tasks are being fulfilled through environmental impact assessment, eco-regeneration, assistance to organisations implementing environmental and forestry programmes; promotion of environmental and forestry research, extension, education and training to augment the requisite manpower; dissemination of environmental information; international cooperation and creation of environmental awareness among all sectors of the country’s population.

After initial scrutiny, the proposal is placed before the Standing Committee on Bio-Resources and Environment for its consideration. Based on the recommendation of the Standing Committee, the proposal is processed for sanction.

The project is monitored by the Department/Steering Committee/Reviewing Committee/Standing Committee.

Thirty copies of the project completion report (PCR) are required to be submitted.Copies of the report are sent to user agencies for implementation of the recommendations. A copy of PCR is kept in library.

Man and Biosphere Research Scheme (MAB)
 
  Objective  
 

Man and Biosphere programme emphasises an ecological approach to the study of inter-relationship between man and his environment. It aims to develop the basis within the natural and social sciences for the rational use and conservation of the resources of the biosphere. Further, it seeks to provide the scientific knowledge and trained personnel needed to manage the natural resources in a rational and sustained manner.

  Mechanism of implementation and monitoring  
 
The PI is required to submit annual progress report in a prescribed proforma. The monitoring committee evaluates the progress of the project based on presentation by the PI. Action is taken on the evaluation report.
 
Twenty copies of the project completion report (PCR) are required to be submitted. Copies of the report are referred to expert. PCRs are separately kept in the section.

To conserve the biodiversity and genetic integrity of plants, animals and microorganisms in their totality as a part of the natural ecosystems so as to ensure their self-perpetuation and unhindered evolution of living resources.
 
To promote research that would assist ecological conservation both within and areas adjacent to these reserves.
 
To provide facilities for international cooperation and people - environment interaction in a whole range of bio-climatic and bio-geographic situations of the biosphere.

Current land-use practices and their impact on the biota and ecology, with practical ameliorative suggestions that would be acceptable to the local people.
 
Occurrence of exotic plants including weeds and animal species their impact on the indegenous biota and their control; and - Education, training and awareness.

Proposals are to be sent initially to State Research Advisory Committee and after the project is discussed in the Committee, ten copies of the final/revised project is to be sent to Ministry for consideration in the Scientific Advisory Committee on BRs for approval.
 
 
The project is monitored by a Review Committee which is held once in a year where all the PIs are required to give presentation. Follow up action on the recommendations of the Review Committee is taken immediately.
 
 
Ten copies of the project completion report (PCR) are required to be submitted. Copies of the report are referred to experts for evaluation. Copies are also sent to the concerned State governments for helping them in implementation of management action plan in the respective BRs. Copies of the PCR are kept in the section.
