UNIVERSITY GRANTS COMMISSION (UGC)
 
  Introduction  
       
 
The UGC was set on 5th November 1956 by an Act of Parliament for the promotion and coordination of university education and determination and maintenance of standards in teaching, examination and research. UGC allocates grants to eligible universities and colleges. It tenders its expert advice to both the central and state governments on the measures necessary for improvement of higher education.

  Objective  
 

To provide support to teachers in the universities and colleges for research to enable them to take up concerted and indepth studies in specific subject areas.

 
  Who can submit a proposal  
 
Permanent teachers with Ph.D in the universities and colleges. Retired teachers upto the age of 75 years can also participate.
 
  When and how to submit a proposal  
 
The proposal in the prescribed proforma can be submitted to UGC so as to reach the Commission either before 31st January or 31st July each year. The proposal has to be scrutinised by a duly constituted research committee consisting of at least two faculty members and one outside subject expert. The minutes of the research committee should be attached with the proposal.
 
  Areas of research  
 
Staff, hiring charges, equipment, books, contingencies, chemicals, consumables and travel. The project cost is limited to a maximum of Rupees seven lakhs only.
 
  Items not allowed out of the grant  
 
Imported equipment, international travel.
 
  Mechanism of implementation and monitoring  
 
The proposal is evaluated by an Expert Committee and based on the recommendations, the final decision on the proposal is taken by the Commission.
Mid-term group review meetings of projects which have completed one and a half to two years are held where the PI is invited to present the progress of the work before an Expert Committee.
Two copies of the PCR are required to be submitted. It is referred to a expert for evaluation. One copy of the PCR is kept in the UGC library.
