The Department of Biotechnology supports R&D projects in various areas of Biotechnology. While considering projects for support, priority is given to proposals involving direct applications or requiring scale up operations or field trials of products, etc. where possibilities of generating products, processes and services for commercial use are visible. The Department also supports projects involving basic research with potential of practical applicability.

To support research projects/programmes both in basic and applied areas of biotechnology.

Any scientist who is a regular employee and is involved in active research in biotechnology and related areas.

Grants are for recurring and non-recurring requirements as well as for R&D staff supports. Recurring expenditure includes cost for chemicals, consumables, glasswares, internal travel, contingency etc. Non-recurring expenditure includes supports for capital equipment, instruments, facilities etc.

Creation of senior posts, purchase of less important equipment/instrument, foreign travel etc. are generally discouraged.

To generate required trained manpower in the multi-disciplinary fields of biotechnology which will help in implementation of various projects/R&D programmes and meet the growing need for trained manpower by the industry.

Public funded institutions/Universities, recognised and autonomous societies, DSIR recognised in-house R&D centres.

Grants are for recurring and non-recurring requirements such as equipment, consumables, travel, salary/stipend, contingency maintenance of equipment etc.

To create a network of infrastructure facilities for building strong R&D base, manufacturing capabilities and to provide services to scientists and technologists working in the field of biotechnology.

Institutions/core group of scientists with expertise in the specific area concerned.

Equipment, salary and other recurring expenses along with overhead charges. The cost of project should not exceed Rupees twenty Crores
